About Connecticut's Historic Gardens

Florence Griswold MuseumMission

Connecticut's Historic Gardens raises awareness of distinctive historic sites and gardens within Connecticut's borders. By pooling funding, design, marketing and volunteer resources, the organization increases programming opportunities, offering the public experiences rich in beauty and history, and brings greater recognition and visitation to member sites.

History

Connecticut's Historic Gardens was started in 2002 by a small group of historic sites with gardens that pooled resources to participate in the annual Connecticut Flower and Garden Show held in Hartford, Connecticut in February. Out of this collaboration came the development of a comprehensive brochure, funded by a grant from the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism, that is now distributed in CT, MA and NY. The group now also participates in the New England Flower Show in Boston. In 2009, the group will host its 6th Annual Connecticut's Historic Gardens Day, with special programs offered at each site.

Membership

Criteria for membership are as follows:
1. The site must have a garden, preference given to domestic sites with historic house(s) and related garden(s).
2. The garden(s) must be historically significant. Garden(s) may have been designed by a known designer or reflect an historical garden style or design philosophy. The site should demonstrate an effort to use historic plant varieties where feasible.
3. The garden must be open to the public, exhibit visitor readiness and make an effort to interpret the landscape as part of the overall interpretive scheme for the site.
4. The site must be able to pay annual dues ($250 for organizations with annual operating budgets under $500,000 and $500 for those with annual operatin budgets over $500,000), participate in CHG-sponsored programs such as the CT Flower & Garden Show and Connecticut's Historic Gardens Day, and, if appropriate, participate in meetings (approximately 4–6 per year)
5. The Site must have a contact person who can speak for the site on matters of public relations, programming and budgeting.

All candidates for membership are visited by members of the Program Committee. Candidates are then presented to the full CHG group for a vote. CHG acknowledges that at some point it may be necessary to limit the number of members in order to maintain cohesiveness.
